Chicken Wire Pumpkin DIY

Learn how to make a pumpkin out of chicken wire in just a few easy steps to create your own cheap Halloween decor!

Fall is officially here and we are so excited! Well, the first day of fall is offically tomorrow--September 22nd but September 1st marks for us when it 100% acceptable to order pumpkin spice lattes and burn all the apple spice candles! We ran across these chicken wire pumpkins on Pinterest and had to give it a shot because when two worlds collide (chicken wire + fall) you have to give it a shot.

When we made the chicken wire light ball project a few weeks ago, shaping the chicken wire into a perfect ball shape did give us a bit of a run for our money--we're not going to lie. So we were a little hestiant and how this might turn out but it's really pretty simple!

Supplies Needed:

• Chicken wire

• Wire cutters

• Orange spray paint

• Backdrop for spray paint

• Gloves

• Needle nose pliers

• Burlap twine

Step 1: Cut a rectangular piece of chicken wire about 35 inches long and 24 inches high

Make sure to wear gloves since the edges of the chicken wire can be extremely sharp. As you can see from the photos we did not wear gloves and we did earn a few scratches so we recommend to learn from our mistake. You would think by now we would just wear gloves all of the time since we've done so many projects but sometimes you just get so excited to start a project you just dive in!

Step 2: Fold the long ends of the chicken wire together so you have a long cylinder shape

After folding the chicken wire edges together, take your needle nose pliers and curve the pieces of wire together so they are interlocking. It's okay if the edges don't interlock perfectly, just enough to connect.

Step 3: Now, take the top and bottom portions of your cylinder and fold them down around each other

You may have to cut some slits around the top and fold the flaps down around each other so it creates a flat top and bottom.

Step 4: Now that you have your enclosed rectangular cylinder-- push the top and the bottom and push it together towards the middle so it's more of a ball shape.

Once you have the ends pushed together more-- take your hand and press the middle of the chicken to create the fat pumpkin shape (see the third photo above). After you have your pumpkin shaped the way you want it to look, spray paint it orange to give it a finished pumpkin look.

Step 4: Make the pumpkin top out of chicken wire

Some tutorials made the stem of the pumpkin using the same pieces as the pumpkin, but we felt like it was too confusing and easier to make the stem by itself. Just cut a small piece of chicken wire and fold it into a cone shape. Then mold the chicken wire into a stem shape and wrap it with your burlap string. We hot glued ours to the top of our pumpkin and added a fake leaf we had leftover from another project and voila!
